A native of Gainesville, Florida, Mr. O’Byrne earned his Bachelors of Science Nursing (BSN) from the University of Florida, College of Nursing, Gainesville, Florida in 1992 and his Masters of Science Nursing, Mental Health Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Nurse Specialist at the University of Virginia in 2004. He was commissioned into the United States Navy Nurse Corps in 1992 where he served for 25 years. Mr. O’Byrne has held clinical staff appointments as a member of both medical and nursing staff. He has worked in psychiatry (inpatient and outpatient), psychology and substance abuse rehabilitation treating active duty service members, family members and retirees. He has specialized training and experience with combat veterans as well as those with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. He has held multiple senior medicine leadership assignments that include as Director of Medicine (USNH Guam) and Director of Mental Health (USNH Camp Lejeune). He has served on hospital boards and a community mental health board. Mr. O’Byrne’s academic appointments include Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Science Center (New Orleans), School of Nursing. He has been a principal investigator (PI) that examined the efficacy of treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. He is the recipient of multiple military service awards and military campaign medals (Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom).
